Heaphy Track, West Coast NZ

Walking the Heaphy Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, 4 days, 78.4km through coast, forest, and everything in between. One section winds through a dark, moss-covered forest, damp, hidden, and the kind of place fungi absolutely love. That’s where I started spotting these: the werewere-kōkako, or New Zealand blue mushrooms. A blue so bold and shocking, it almost doesn’t look real. I stopped counting after seeing more than 20 along the track. These are some of the better-lit ones I came across.
